Chapter Thirty-One

Fury seized control of Alan’s actions when the man grabbed Michaela and held a cloth over her nose and mouth. He’d seen the threat before she had, but as the beast, he couldn’t warn her.

The man stood taller than Michaela, stocky and muscular. He knew it was the shape shifter in his human form and he had gone after Michaela, drugged her by the way her body had gone limp in his arms. Had he laid in wait for her? Followed her here?

A bigger question plagued him. Why was Michaela here? They were supposed to meet at Fiddler’s Luck. She would have been safe there. Damn him for not realizing she’d be in danger by association. The shifter knew Michaela was important to him and would use her to get to him.

He rose out of the water, not caring if someone saw him. Diplomacy be damned. He couldn’t allow the shifter to drag her away. Fear coiled around him like a foul scent. If he failed, Michaela would die.

The shape shifter threw Michaela to the side without care for her wellbeing. Her limp body fell like a ragdoll, lying still as death. Alan roared again, lunging forward with the intent of ripping the shifter’s head off. He didn’t care the consequences it would bring. There were ways of disposing the body where no one would ever find it.

The shifter turned to face him. He didn’t have time to shift as he dove to safety and away from Alan’s sharp teeth. His body hit the wood pier and rolled away with preternatural speed.

The shifter had the gall to chuckle as if he was enjoying this. In his crouched position with his right hand on the pier and legs tucked beneath him, he made ready to spring. “I underestimated ye again, my friend,” he seethed. “We’ll fight no doubt, but no’ today. On my terms and when I say.”

What did the bastard mean on his terms? He planned to finish this now.

The shifter sprung like a panther going after its prey. He landed beside Michaela. His hands whipped out and shoved her. Her body flew through the air, landing in the water with a splash that sent waves crashing over the pier. She was unconscious, helpless…sinking to the bottom.

“Are ye goin’ to let her drown?” The shifter’s sinister chortle rang like a death toll. The bastard knew he’d won. Alan would have to let him escape or Michaela would drown.

Alan roared and dove into the water, going after her.

She floated downward, her arms outstretched and her legs useless in her unconscious state. Strands of her hair drifted over her face as if they were creatures trying to devour her.

Alan swooped beneath her and shifted back to his human form. His hands wrapped around her waist, keeping her firmly against him, not daring to loosen his grip for fear she’d slip away. His strokes propelled him upward, only seconds ticked by, yet it felt like time stood still, preventing him from saving the woman he loved.
